I have learned so much in this class. First off, I knew only limited knowledge about the careers presented to me in the Writing Arts field. I took this class wanting to know more possibilities as well as ways to find internships available to me in my study. I knew nothing about graduate school and really had no intention of considering it at all.
After Professor Mangini’s Professions in Writing Arts class, I knew a lot more than what I came in with. I found more careers that I could possibly choose to aim for after school and those I wanted to avoid. When researching a specific writing job, I chose one I did not know and found it quite interesting. It definitely became something I was interested in applying for when my schooling is complete.
Graduate school was very interesting to learn about. I know what is out there now, how to apply, and what to look for in a school. It is something that I did consider doing after learning about it. I am still personally unsure about if I want to spend more money, more time, and more resources while working a full-time job. If I could afford not to work, I would definitely go to graduate school and get my Master’s degree. I am, though, willing to work for a few years and maybe go back to school later for that degree if I still can.
I am still a little shaky on internships just because they can be hard to find for something I want or something that is close by. I know there are places out there where you can find one and apply. I also know there is such a thing as Skype interviews and places where you do not have to live close by to intern there. All that seems so weird to me, though. I would definitely like to get an internship to get my foot in the door, but with a full-time job and going to school full-time as well, it just seems impossible.
This class has helped me prepare for future careers because coming into it I knew nothing about a CV or a query letter. I never had done a cover letter either. This class took the time to teach and show the students how to properly make one. I especially thing the query letter was helpful because most people who take the Writing Arts major consider writing a book or two. It was good to see how to present your book for consideration to an agent.
The Writing Arts program can prepare people for certain careers. My main focus is to become a book editor. I choose classes in the Writing Arts major that will possibly help me achieve that such as the American English Grammar course. It is always good to know your language when you want to help others with it. However, the class requirements for the Writing Arts program is very generic and does not prepare you for the specific career you want. You have to choose the courses to get you there yourself.
I believe, overall, Professions in Writing Arts was very helpful to the students who want to have backup options and see what is out there for them. Instead of focusing on one thing, the course focuses on a range of information and helps us learn the proper way to get there. You cannot just write anything to get into grad school! There’s a certain way that’ll catch the attention of the admissions people of the grad school and this class helps you become familiar with that. This class also helped us learn not to be discouraged because there are a lot of jobs out there for us, even jobs where a degree isn’t necessary.
